International Wine Label Design Competition

Nei mesi scorsi ho avuto l’onore ed il piacere di far parte della giuria della prima International Wine Label Design Competition, organizzata da Balzac Communications & Marketing al fine di supportare il Volunteer Center of Napa Valley (un ente benefico di volontariato).

Recentemente sono stati pubblicati i risultati della competizione, che ha visto concorrere per quattro diverse categorie, con un premio speciale per il miglior progetto:

  • Successful Innovation
  • Dramatic Graphics
  • Classic Style
  • Labels Not Currently in Production

Il vincitore: Le Poisson Gris

Il vincitore complessivo è un progetto grafico per un’azienda che produce vino in Tunisia, Le Poisson Gris, segno che in tutto il mondo, ormai, si presta attenzione al packaging e alla creatività per avere successo nella distribuzione vinicola.

Dall’uso del pesce che congiunge virtualmente etichetta e retroetichetta al dettaglio del disegno, questa etichetta è risultata molto efficace. Con un messaggio “Eat fish”, in piccolo, molto curioso. Lo stesso sito web è molto coerente.

Personalmente mi è piaciuta molto l’etichetta di “Nine Hats“, progetto corale di 9 winemaker che hanno realizzato un blend rosso nello Stato di Washington. Rosso come la bombetta, in stile Magritte, che emerge dalle altre, portando lo sguardo al centro dell’etichetta.

Altre etichette sono risultate “già viste”, ma complessivamente la qualità delle proposte è stata alta (prevalentemente da parte di aziende USA, con qualche candidato spagnolo o neozelandese).

Le iscrizioni per l’edizione 2011 si apriranno in primavera: chissà che non vi partecipi anche qualche azienda italiana…

 

 

international Wine Label DESIGN competition ANNOUNCES WINNERS

Napa, CA – The Volunteer Center of Napa Valley is proud to announce the winners of the International Wine Label Design Contest.  Le Poisson Gris, a wine label out of North Africa designed by Ana-Lucia Rosales, won the Overall Award.

 A panel of international judges chose the winners in 5 categories:

 Successful Innovation

  • GOLD – Le Poisson Gris, designed by Ana-Lucia Rosales of New York
  • SILVER – Cinder, designed by Paul Carew, Carew Co. of Boise, Idaho
  • BRONZE – Ambigram, designed by Casey DenBleyker, Red Car Studio, Portland, Oregon, creative director Amanda Frederickson, Pigs Fly Public Relations, Kansas City, MO

Dramatic Graphics

  • GOLD – Le Poisson Gris, designed by Ana-Lucia Rosales of New York
  • SILVER – Abdon, designed by David Grasekamp, Mowaii Creative Agency of Germany
  • BRONZE – Ambigram, designed by Casey DenBleyker, Red Car Studio, Portland, Oregon, creative director Amanda Frederickson, Pigs Fly Public Relations, Kansas City, MO

Classic Style

  • GOLD – 9 Hats, designed by Michelle Poole, the Design Poole of Seattle, Washington (9 Hats refers to the 9 winemakers of Long Shadows, a collection of ultra-premium wines from the major wine regions of the world.)
  • SILVER – Alan McCorkindale Blanc de Noirs, designed by Alan McCorkindale of Wellington, New Zealand
  • BRONZE – Big Ranch Red, designed by John Kasten, Kasten Design of Napa, California

  • GOLD – Black Ice, photo by Bob Dabrowski, layout by Jen Williams of jenwilldesign.com
  • SILVER – 4 Couples, designed by Larry Stanley of Elk Grove, California

Overall Winner

  • Le Poisson Gris, designed by Ana-Lucia Rosales of New York

 Entries were judged on the following criteria: overall originality and creativity, use of typography, and use of graphics.  Certificate Awards for the International Wine Label Competition will be mailed after the judging and will consist of Gold, Silver, and Bronze awards.

The roster of international judges includes Paul Wagner, co-author of Wine Marketing & Sales and wine marketing instructor at Napa Valley College. “There is no question that labels play a critical role in wine marketing, and this competition brings attention to those who are really good at it. The winning labels were fun, dramatic, creative, and most of all, effective!”

Rounding out the team of judges are Pascal Durand, Wine Marketing professor at the ENESAD program at the University of Burgundy in Dijon, France; Tim Gaiser, MS, Director of Education, Court of Master Sommeliers Americas; Javier Merino, Management and Marketing Professor at the University of Mendoza, Argentina; Pierpaolo Penco, Director at the Executive Master in Wine Business program at MIB School of Management, Trieste, Italy; and Liz Thach, PhD, Wine Business Professor, Sonoma State University, who co-authored Wine Marketing & Sales with Paul Wagner.

A call for entries for the next competition will go out in spring of 2011. The proceeds of the competition, which are in the form of submission fees, go directly to benefit the Volunteer Center of Napa Valley. Over the past year, the center has provided an estimated $500,000 in volunteer labor to benefit local non-profit organizations. Please visit www.iwldc.org for more information.
